Midnight Creamy Adventures at Kreamzz

Its been a long day of pest control at my place, and it is hot, and I am exhausted. Mom has been helping out. Sister has her exams so she is a passive player, but has helped a lot too. I am the one who has done the least, honestly. I am no cleanliness freak, I am ok with the mess. But it is hot and it is exhausting due to that. Food is generally my department, so I take mom and my sister out for a little treat – ice cream. It’s past 11 in the night, so I was not sure how many shops would be really open, though it is a Saturday night. Working night shifts has rendered my sense of night life practically dead. And yes, I don’t like that a lot, not being able to live the nights.

So, we decide we can go Baskin Robbins at Jetalpur Road, which I am aware is open till 1AM. But on our way, I notice that Kreamzz Ice Cream cafe is very much open and alive. Now Kreamzz is a place I have heard a lot about and have been promising to take my mom and sister for quite a few months now. But we forget, I sleep off (night shifts to blame), and something or the other happens due to which we have not been able to make this visit so far. Today, then, is the golden day to pay a visit to the small ice cream cafe in Trivia Complex at Natubhai Circle.

We order an ice cream each. I take Red Velvet, my sister takes Cookie Mosh and mom settles for R U Nuts? Mom’s choice definitely voices what she must be feeling about both her kids everyday. We both, my sister and I, are unique samples of our own separate kinds with very few similarities to boast of between us, except the rate at which we seem to be gaining weight off late and our love for cakes and pizzas and everything that mom would love to forbid us to eat.

The service was really slow, maybe they were understaffed or there were too many customers, I don’t know. I was told it will take 10-15 minutes, but it took quite longer than that. I was done with my ice cream (and maybe even finished digesting half of it!) when my sister’s ice cream showed up. And she was more than halfway done with her’s when mom’s ice cream showed up. It’s odd when you are a family visiting and everybody else in the family has to sit and stare at that one person who got his dish early. And this one person has to bear all the greedy, jealous, hungry stares from the rest of the family/friends.

I am the lucky one today, my ice cream arrives the first. Red Velvet is the Queen of New York desserts and I have a super love for it. This particular dessert I am having has Red Velvet infused into scoop of Vanilla ice cream. There are pieces of Red Velvet cake all over the Vanilla ice cream. It is served in a cup of crispy sweet waffle, which I enjoy breaking into pieces and using as a psuedo-spoon. What I miss is the sour cream, or even butter cream. Any Red Velvet lover will tell you that the Red Velvet dessert would be incomplete without a sour cream or butter cream. But it’s ok, I am not complaining. The ice cream was good. Not heavenly, I am definitely not divinely indulged, as Australia’s ‘Domestic Goddess’ – Nigella Lawson would say. But I am not disappointed either.

My sister’s Cookie Mosh ice cream was a visual delight. Generous scoop of vanilla served on a waffle cup, infused with loads and loads of sizable pieces of Oreo cookie biscuits, and choco chips. And there are two pieces of chocolate wafer cream roll sticking out on the top with the classic Orea cookie on top of it, giving it a very Alien’s antenna like appearance. The combination of vanilla and chocolate is a classic beauty, there is no debating that. The taste is great, Oreo doesn’t overpower the vanilla or the chocolate. All the flavors are decipherable and this would definitely come close to a divine indulgence. But the biggest highlight and the best part about this ice cream is the presentation, the plating. For me, the packaging and the presentation of a dish is of utmost importance, just like the taste and the value for money and the other things. Plating is what sets my mood before I dig my spoon into the dish. And Cookie Mosh takes a full score in presentation.

Mom’s R U Nuts, is a smooth dessert. Often, we eat ice creams that have a creamy texture but if we pay attention, it feels icy on the tongue. What I mean is, there would be minute ice crystals, which have not taken the ice cream flavor, and can be perceived on the tongue if we pay attention. They are minute at times, they can be huge to gigantic at times. Being a dairy technologist, I can assure you that presence of ice crystals in an ice cream is a defect. It is not harmful, but ideally good ice cream should not have ice crystallization. It indicates uneven temperature of cooling too or maybe cooling without stirring. The R U Nuts that mom’s having is smooth, very smooth. It is a butterscotch ice cream with caramel syrup drizzled on top with a generous load of nuts sprinkled all over. Like the other two we had, the ice cream is served in a waffle cup. It looks delicious. Not as delicious as the Cookie Mosh.  but way, way more awesome than my on Red Velvet. Red Velvet had no effect wow when it comes to presentation. R U Nuts on the other hand, apart from being smooth, had a delight of colors and flavors. It doesn’t come close to the butterscotch ice cream from the famous ice cream outlet – Sarvoday ice creams in Anand, but it was good. I have been having Sarvoday ice creams since I was a kid, and the shop has been there since long before I was even born, but on the joy of Sarvoday Ice creams, we shall talk some other time.

Overall, the visit was great. We were perhaps the last to leave. What caught my fancy was a particular wallpaper. It has pictures of boxes, which to my named eye, did not give that effect of being stacked on top of the other, but when I clicked the picture, it came out as a 3D effect of stacking. So, maybe the camera lens of my Xperia C3 is better than my naked eyes.
