Cheeses from Kodaikanal

Last year, I had attended the Bandra Wine Festival at the D’Monte Park. It is an annual festival giving wine enthusiasts like me an opportunity to try out so many different wines from the most reputed wine brands of India. Along with that, it also gives an opportunity try out a variety of handmade gourmet cheeses from Kodai Dairy. The Taj group of hotels, the British Airways are some of the clients of Kodai Dairy.

Kodai Dairy manufactures a wide variety of cheeses – different types of Cheddary, types of Edam, Feta, Jack Cheese, types of Gouda, types of Mozzarella, etc. From such a wide collection, it was a very difficult task for me to choose three slabs, one for me, and one each for two of my best friends. Eventually, I picked up a three layer cheddar cheese for myself, a smoked edam for one of my friends and a red chili cheddar for another friend.

The three layer cheddar I chose for myself, had, as the name suggests, three layers in one slab. One layer was a black pepper cheddar, one was a smoked cheddar, and one was a red chili pepper, and all the three layers were combined to form one slab. It is not one but the best of three worlds in one. It is moist, fresh and has a great flavor. It has a firm body and a smooth texture. The added flavors have been infused very well, without overpowering the original flavor of the cheese.

My friend had the red chili pepper and I did post his review up here before. He quite enjoyed it and he did mention that it reminded him of the pepper jack cheese from his time in the United States.

My other friend tried out the smoked edam cheese. He had never had a smoked cheese before or edam cheese before, both the profiles were new for him. He quite thoroughly enjoyed it. He tried making a sandwich with it, but he mentioned he enjoyed it more with a tangy salad. He really liked it and enjoyed the experience.

I have had Kodai cheese every time I am at the Bandra Wine Festival, which I do attend every year. And it has never disappointed me, ever.
